Why? How? What? Leading Organizational Change

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

Student creativity drives musicianship from the outside in. Obviously, we as instructors will always play a necessary role in music education, but students ultimately must take control over their own learning to reach that next level. We want young musicians to be able to see and hear for themselves how they are progressing and how to develop their skills. Providing them with the proper tools can make the difference between a student that gives up and a student that is motivated to get better and learn more. Here is my why statement.

Why?

Every student deserves the ability to visualize and harness their musical potential.

How?

Students will use E-Portfolios to allow for a subjective monitoring of musical progress, technical development, and personal goals

What?

Students will embrace creativity and expressiveness in route to becoming the best musician they can be.

Summary

We live in a world where a large percentage of people will willingly run with a false narrative, because the information activated their emotions rather than thought process. It's so easy to read a headline and go "Oh my goodness!" rather than to dive into the details of the article. Targeting the hearts of the audience is a technique that presidential candidates have been using forever. President Obama sold "change" and President Trump sold "maga". These are both non-factual selling points that target the heart instead of the mind (I'm speaking directly to the slogans, this is not an attempt for a political conversation).

So how does this change my thinking on how to promote change? Well to me its obvious that the people who care most about the numbers and facts are the parties doing the actual work and research. The audience cares about the results, the audience cares about what they know. They don't care that our marching band practiced for hours, sometimes past midnight. But they know why it exists, to make crazy shapes and provide entertainment during the football game. They support us. The audience doesn't care that the star QB throws 1,000 footballs after practice is over. They know why he's there, to make amazing plays and put his team in position to win the game. They support him.

Again, the audience cares about what they know. You have done the work, you have done the research. Now when promoting change, it's important that your audience knows your "why". Once they know that, they care about it, then they can support you.
