This week I did a search on myself, learned about what a digital footprint/tattoo is, learned about net neutrality, created an animated video, and made connections about the impact social media has on certain elements of digital citizenship.
As I mentioned in my discussion board post, I was bittersweet about my google search of myself. I was pleased that nothing unethical popped up. However, I desire more professional results and accomplishments when I am looked up. I will definitely monitor my digital footprint moving forward and create more opportunities for impressive results. I also found some people with my same name. That leads me to wonder if anyone has ever searched my name and got me confused with the wrong person! I gave my digital footprint a score of a 3. I definitely desire that my digital footprint be branded towards music education more and I want my name search to produce more positive results. I would like potential employers to find more results based off the work that I am capable of. Your digital footprint is important because the internet is tailored to customize your experience. Just like the ads you see are filtered towards you based off your internet activity. This limits discovering of new ideas. In addition to your online experience, your digital footprint shapes your online reputation. I would advise students to post things that they truly love and are proud of and highlight the best versions of themselves and their growth in their e-portfolio.
I would say net neutrality is what I learned the most about. I had no collection of the information provided about net neutrality and the FCC. I found it very interesting that the Federal Communications Committee enforced rules and regulations to ensure that users have an open access to internet with no bandwidth restrictions. This concept was a bit hard for me to follow at first. I am not sure if this was due to the writing style of the author, or the complexity of the topic at hand. Net neutrality enables teachers and students to access the best available tools and resources that the web has to offer. Teachers rely heavily on web sources and tools for instruction and interactive purposes, and an unneutral internet could limit accessibility to certain web features. This could result in budget requests for certain network services, or even teachers paying out of pocket. On the contrary, if the districts provide a full web-based experience, teachers and students could lack the resources at home depending on their situation.
The tool I used to create my animated video was called Moovly. I had never heard of it before this assignment, and this was my first time ever creating an animated presentation. I was instructed to choose a technological advancement and explain its impact on digital citizenship. I chose to connect social media to 4 elements of digital citizenship: Commerce (buying and selling online), communication (messaging, video chat, commenting), health (social media addiction), and security (protection of personal information).
