Guide to Practicing at Home: Course Introduction

What separates a great music ensemble from a good one is the commitment levels of the members. We know this means being present and committed at school, but it also means knowing how to properly practice at home. Practice is when you spend time outside of school to develop your skills. This is a very important procedure for the development of you and the ensemble. As beginning musicians, you may get home and realize you do not know how to start practicing. Upon completion of this course, you will be an independent learner. You will know what and how to practice to achieve your personal goals as a musician, as well as the requirements of the music ensemble you are ever a part of.

Learning Goals

  1. Musicians learn the formula for a major scale and rhythmic notation in simple meters as foundational knowledge to build upon.

  2. Musicians will use foundational music knowledge as a guide to develop at home.

  3. Students will identify areas of struggle and select practice methods.

  4. Students will implement personal skill development in their practices.

  5. Students will be able to conduct a full individual practice while developing the musical elements.

Desired Results

  1. Students identify the basic components of practicing independently.

  2. Students understand how to transfer development skills from school rehearsal to an individual setting (and vice-versa).

  3. Students will be able to conduct a full independent practice at home.
