Topic
The topic of my action research is Electronic Portfolios and T-Tess goals. The purpose of this research is to study how the utilization of technology in a general music classroom impacts the results of yearly T-Tess Goals.
Purpose
The research from this study will be used to create better learning opportunities for students, and used to become a better facilitator of knowledge as well. The purpose of T-Tess is for teachers to set goals for their students and their selves. The results are measured by a pre-test at the beginning of the year followed by a post test at the end. This is a wonderful opportunity to measure the impact of electronic portfolios in the music classroom. The e-portfolio can remain an independent variable because The T-Tess goals are focused around the music TEKS. Instead of using the e-portfolio as a goal, the T-Tess goal consist of conquering a musical objective. The e-portfolio will be incorporated as a tool to meet those standards.
Fundamental research question
Does the use of e-portfolios in an elementary general music class have an impact on T-Tess results?
Research design
A mixed-methods approach will be used to collect data. Of course, both qualitative and quantitative data serve evenly important purposes, but also both types of data are necessary to collect because T-Tess goals are actually expressed as one qualitative goal and one quantitative goal. All data collected will be used to meet and measure these goals.
Data collection
Quantitative data will consist of quiz scores, class percentages, individual percentages, and the pre/post-test grades. The qualitative data that I will be collecting will include musical performance quality, student musical comprehension, student behavior, teacher weekly blog posts, notes from team discussions, and self-observation.
Measurement instruments
My experimental group will be the 5th grade team, which has five different classes. I see a different 5th grade class each day resulting in students having music once a week. The 5th grade team is made up of 4 general education classes and 1 gifted and talented group. I will incorporate electronic portfolios in 2 gen-ed classes out of the 5 total classes. The T-Tess results of those two gen-ed classes will be measured against the other 2 gen-ed classes and the GT class. It is very important to understand (and practice) that the curriculum doesn’t variate so the impact of the e-portfolio can be accurately measured.
Focus of my innovation topic
*To avoid possible confusion it’s important to note that my innovation plan involves utilizing electronic portfolios in my Choir Program. This action research plan is going to be the first time that e-portfolios get introduced in the general music classroom curriculum. *
The focus of my innovation topic and literature review supports why elementary music students should be digitally documenting the earliest moments of their musical journey, beginning with their first choir audition. My action research plan will investigate further on the impact of e-portfolios in music education measured by my annual T-Tess goals.
