This week I was able to get a clear understanding of the 9 elements of digital citizenship. Digital citizenship is the application of modern social fashion to the use of technology. The “digital world” should not be viewed as a fantasy world, or an alternate universe separate from reality. Whether digital or not, the expectation remains for citizens to behave responsibly and appropriately. The contrast between citizenship and digital citizenship is in the label as the digital aspect is really the main difference here. Other than that, citizenship should look similar on both sides. The element of digital security is particularly important in my district. Digital security should be a priority for all school districts. Upgraded technology should be assisted with updated information regarding digital security. The contrast between citizenship and digital citizenship to me is in the label. Digital citizenship is defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use. If you took the word technology out of that definition, the expectation remains for citizens to behave responsibly and appropriately.
9 Areas of Digital Citizenship
1. Digital Access- equitable distribution of technology and online resources.
2. Digital Commerce- the electronic buying and selling of goods
3. Digital Communication-the electronic exchange of information.
4. Digital Literacy- the process of understanding technology and its use
5. Digital Etiquette- electronic standards of conduct or procedures
6. Digital Law- the creation of rules and policy that address issues related to the online world
7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities- are those requirements and freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world.
8. Digital Health and Wellness- physical and psychological well-being in a digital world
9. Digital Security- understanding and being aware of attacks and how to prevent them.
The categorizing of the 9 elements helps identify how they are grouped together in terms of their effect on the school environment. The 3 categories group the elements by their effect on student learning and academic performance (access, literacy, and communication), overall school environment and student behavior (etiquette, rights and responsibilities, and security), and student life outside of school (commerce, health, and wellness). The principles of the 9 elements are grouped together by how they should be taught to students starting at the beginning level of education. The 3 principles are respect yourself and others (etiquette, access, law), educate yourself/connect with others (communication, literacy, commerce), and protect yourself and others (rights and responsibility, safety, health). Two elements of digital citizenship that are particularly important to my school district are elements four and five. Element four is about communication in the digital world. Communication is huge in a school district and happens through multiple digital channels. It is extremely important to be precise and maintain clear, respectful, and appropriate means of communication to parents, staff, and students. The eighth element of digital citizenship is protecting self and others from harm. Cyber security is towards the top of the list of priorities of a school district. There is so much crucial information stored in our databases, it must remain secure. Every year there is training on school protocols and cyber security is the longest most elaborate one. Everyone in the district must be extremely careful about their behavior on the internet to avoid cyber security breaches.
